The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has identified failure of government as major cause of illegal migration in the country.

Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, also supported that the misplacement of priorities in the management of the country’s economy was the cause of perilous journey by Nigerians through the Sahara Desert in search of illusive better living in Europe.

Sanusi and Obaseki spoke yesterday in Abuja at the public presentation of “From Frying Pan to Fire,” a book written by Chairman of the Editorial Board of ThisDay Newspaper, Olusegun Adeniyi.

Obaseki, who did the book presentation and bought copies for every educational institution in Edo State, disclosed that majority of trafficked Nigerian girls are from his state.

However, Sanusi, who was chairman of the occasion, added that international inequality between developing and the developed worlds and globalisation of the economic system are other reasons.

Sanusi said: “Migration is a big and a complex issue. The discussion on migration is like a discussion on extremism. How much of it is a result of circumstances of economy, of poverty, of climate change and how much of it is a matter of people having the wrong ideas.”

“Now, to come back home we have to grow up, we can’t blame Europe and America for our problems, we have mismanaged our economy, we have misplaced our priorities, we have not understood the importance of development. We think this roads and bridges are development not human beings

Also in another forum, Chief Executive Officer of the Coscharis Group, Cosmos Maduka, said the challenges facing the country make the people to seek greener pasture, having lost confidence in its leadership.

Maduka made the disclosure at the 6th Emerging African Leaders Foundation Conference organised yesterday by the Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics (CSAAE) in Abuja.
