Rotary decries rate of accidents along Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The President of Rotary Club of Arepo Long Bridge, Rotary International, District 9110, Chief Wole Benson Akinkuolie, has urged the Ogun State government to support the club with a view to building emergency accident rescue units along Lagos Ibadan Expressway, which would include dispensary, blood bank and other facilities that would take immediate care of accident victims.

Akinkuolie, who stated this at his investiture ceremony as the 2nd President of Rotary Club of Arepo Long Bridge, decried the state of accident victims whenever accident occurs along Lagos Ibadan Expressway, adding that people, instead of assisting the accident victims, only gather together with phones taking pictures while they leave the victims in pains.

He also said that the accident victims were always at the mercy of members of the Federal Road Safety Corps ((FRSC) who only come there to clear the point of accident without necessary medical attention given to the victims.

“One would have expected the FRSC to have something like medical team that would spontaneously render medical aid to victims but this is a mirage.

“Looking at the stretch of Long Bridge from Kara to Sagamu axis, there are only two units of FRSC, one at Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Prayer City and another one after the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Camp with no medical facility, a disgusting situation.

“Since I live in Magboro, most often I witness accidents with many of them involving lives and whenever I see people in pains, I am pained also,” he said.

Akinkuolie, who described the building of the emergency accident rescue units as his star project for his rotary year, commended the government for the construction of Lagos Ibadan Expressway, which has often times caused serious traffic but charged the FRSC personnel to not just focus attention at rescuing accident victims alone but should also be able to guide road users with a view to minimising the traffic.

The Rotary President, who disclosed a budget of N18.8 million for his projects for his service year, which also include construction of five units of toilets to Magboro Primary/Secondary School, provision of borehole to Warewa Community Primary School, donation of drugs and medical equipment to Arepo Health Centre, among others, discouraged building of bus-stops to ease traffic, adding that construction of many too many bus-stops would only create haven for destitute.
