Rotary club inducts pupils as interactors to boost community development

Commmunity development through non-governmental efforts and volunteering was taken to some youths in Victoria Island, Lagos State when the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden inducted select secondary school pupils as interactors.

George Peter, Major Victorious Oghenefegor, Victoria Hawaowu Babatunde and Gbemisola Peter, all teenagers and students of public schools such as Victoria Island Senior Secondary, Victoria Island Junior Secondary, Kuramo Senior and Kuramo Junior, were inducted.

“Today, the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden has formed four charters of young rotary clubs in the four schools to groom interacts to be responsible law-abiding citizens,” Dr. Jide Akeredolu, District 9110 Governor stated during the ceremony. “They have four presidents who will be groomed on the ideals and virtues of Rotary to take up leadership responsibilities of their schools and future endeavours.”

Akeredolu said he shared the Rotary Lekki Golden’s belief in the ‘catch them young’ approach to community development, explaining that the induction gives the students powers to start community development from their schools.

The Rotary Lekki Golden club also commissioned projects on basic literacy education. Witnessed by some tutors of the schools and a principal, the commissioning included renovation and upgrading of four magnetic white board of classrooms, desk and chairs, upgrade of the staff room for Victoria Island Junior secondary school; donation of 5.5KVA generator set for, Victoria Island senior secondary; renovation and upgrading of 2 blocks schools and classrooms as well as donations of seven magnetic white boards, one notice board and one Nigerian flag to Kuramo Junior secondary school; and donation of English, mathematics, chemistry and physics text books and work-book for Kuramo Senior secondary.

Appreciating the club’s largess on behalf of the schools, Mrs. Ogunsola Ogunnowu, principal of Victoria Island junior secondary school, said they were elated that the club has upgraded their schools and classrooms, provided a generating set, textbooks among others to improve the standard and enhance capacity of our students.

Rotn. Winifred Igweonwu, charter president of Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, said despite the group’s relatively young existence, the efforts were necessary.

“Our club is new with just less than six months old, but we thought there is a need assessment for some projects, so we came to these public schools located among multi-international companies as we observed that they lack some vital amenities. The club met the school authorities and individuals and they told us their needs. We decided to attend to the most beneficial needs of the students.”
