It was tragedy on Tuesday night at Nkpor in Idemili North Local Council of Anambra State, when dare- devil armed robbers attacked a police sand bag team, killing one and shoot another in his leg before collecting one Ak-47riffle from them.

The armed robbers numbering about nine and riding on three motorcycles, stormed the police team at Nkpor Market located under the fly-over along the Onitsha/Enugu Expressway, around 8.30p.m.

Eye -witness said on arrival, the robbers positioned themselves before taking the police team by surprise as they were not aware of the presence of the men of the underworld.

He said the robbers approached the police vehicle parked nearby and shot sporadically. That was when one policeman (sergeant Matthew Julius) was killed and his Ak-47 service rifle taken away.

However, another policeman, Sergeant David Alex, escaped death by the whiskers as he fought back but received bullet wound on the leg.

It was learnt that two other Ak-47 rifles that were kept in the police vehicles when the robbers struck were recovered by the police personnel.

The Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Hassan Musa, who confirmed the incident, said, the dead and the injured were taken to Borromeo Hospital, Nkpor.

He said: “We are still at the scene and investigation is on-going to arrest the fleeing robbers.”

He assured that the robbers would be arrested.
