Imo State Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, has said that none of his men or innocent civilian was killed during a shoot-out following an attempted robbery at a new generation bank on Wethedral Road, Owerri, the capital, on Wednesday.

Lakanu, who spoke with journalists in Owerri yesterday, said a report in some newspapers that about three policemen and two civilians were killed by the armed robbers during the operation was false.

He also dismissed the report’s claim that the robbers gained entry into the bank, noting that only one policeman was wounded in his thigh (femor), while two officers sustained minor injuries.

The commissioner urged the public to appreciate the efforts of security agencies, advising that rumour mongers should be mindful of what they peddle. He said he received a call from a manager of the bank about the operation and he mobilized his personnel for action in the area.

“I warned my men. I restricted my men from shooting because of public. We arrived there on time. The whole thing happened outside the bank,’’ Lakanu said.

According to him, one of the hoodlums killed in the operation had an AK 47 with ammunition recovered by his men.

The CP disclosed that the police command had put structures in place to make it difficult for criminals to thrive in the state.

The robbers, numbering about four, had attempted to pursue a customer at the bank who was going to lodge some huge sums, before they met stiff resistance from the police.
