Oba Akran bad road

The Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has been commissioning some signature projects in the last days of his administration. At the weekend, he was at Agege stadium for his testimonial match.

As Lagosians bid him farewell next week, some citizens have urged him to as a matter of priority fix the eyesore that the Oba Akran Road in Ikeja has become.

The busy road in the state’s capital had dilapidated, almost cutting into two before a halfhearted attempt was made to patch it some days after The Guardian report late last month. However, barely two weeks after some base stones were poured to fit the potholes, the road has degenerated again.

Last week’s downpour exposed the shoddy work of road repair carried out when all the stones were again washed off making the potholes grow wider and deeper. As a result, avoidable traffic has been the bane of the axis.

A trader, who simply identified himself as Jones Victor, lamented over the state of the road. He said: “I live at Agege and pass through this road everyday. Even if the journey appears to have been smooth before getting to the bad spot, one is forced to slow down for fear that the stones packed there might damage either the tyres or underneath the vehicle.

“I witnessed two vehicles that jammed one another in the process of avoiding that bad spot. Instead of working on it and make it smooth for motorists, stones were just used to fill the spot. Now the stones have been washed away by flood.

“People who live in Agege, Iju, Orile Agege, Ogba and environs know the importance of this road yet the state government has turn a blind eye to the plight of many citizens making use of the road daily,” he said.

Another citizen, Oseni Olanrewaju, noted that since April 20, when Governor Ambode gave the directive for immediate repairs of 87 roads in Lagos, the state of Oba Akran road, which is among the listed roads for repairs, had gone from bad to worse with the potholes now becoming a ditch.

“How can Oba Akran road leading to Ikeja under bridge have such deep potholes. Please Ambode, come quickly and do this road before you handover or it will put a dent on the legacies you are trying to set for yourself. We spend nothing less than 30 minutes everyday trying to avoid getting our cars spoilt for a stretch that shouldn’t take a minute.”
