In line with the Inspector General of Police (IG), Ibrahim Idris’ directive to mop-up arms across the country, the Rivers State Police Command says it has recovered 179 arms after a sensitisation programme in the state.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed, disclosed this yesterday in Port Harcourt, adding that the command also recovered 437 ammunition and 275 live cartridges.

Zaki said the arms were recovered from some individuals who voluntarily submitted them to the police. His words: “On February 21, 2018 the IGP issued a directive on arms control and mop-up of all illegally acquired firearms in the country.

“As a follow up to that directive, I constituted an eight-man taskforce headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations to enforce the directives.

“In carrying out the mandate on the arms mop-up, the taskforce embarked on sensitization and advocacy visits to local councils. So far, the compliance has been commendable with the recovery of 179 arms, 437 ammunition and of 275 cartridges.”

Zaki added that the exercise was still ongoing and appealled to members of the public to once again take advantage of the window to submit their firearms before the expiration of the deadline.
