Rivers Chief Judge orders arrest of prisons comptroller

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Laminkara Iyayi has ordered the arrest of the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Ahmed Ja’afaru.

Ja’afaru and the Deputy Comptroller of Prisons in Rivers State, Michael Okorie, were accused of failing to produce a former chairman of Asari Toru local council, Ojukaye Flag Amachree in court to face trial for fresh murder charges.

The judge’s order followed an application brought by the counsel to the Attorney General of Rivers State, Godwin Obla (SAN) for contempt proceedings against the comptroller general of prisons and the deputy comptroller of prisons in Rivers State for disobedience to court order.

Amachree is wanted for the alleged murder of one Iminabo Dokubo at Buguma in Asari-Toru local council during the April 11, 2015 governorship election in Rivers.

After hearing the application brought by the counsel to the state, Justice Iyayi ordered the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and the Attorney General of Rivers State to arrest and bring the comptroller general and the deputy comptroller of prisons before the court.

She said they are to appear in court to show why they should not be committed to prison for disobeying the orders of the court.The judge adjourned the matter till October 19.
