Rights groups urge AU to stop Nkurunziza’s third term bid
TWO Nigeria-based pro-democracy groups, the Association of African Writers on Human and People’s Rights (AFRIRIGHTS) and Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), have asked the African Union (AU) to demand that Burundi’s President, Pierre Nkurunziza, steps down immediately his second term expires, as provided for under the extant law.
In a joint statement by the Country Director of AFRIRIGHTS, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and the National Director of Media Affairs of HURIWA, Zainab Yusuf, the rights groups tasked African leaders to intervene on the side of Burundians and stop Nkurunziza from achieving his unconstitutional third term plot, which could trigger another civil war in that country.

The move by some Nigerian based pro-democracy advocacy
groups to complain to the African Union concerning the move of President Pierre
Nkurunziza of Burundi to set aside the constitution and seek a third time in
office is timely and commendable. African lives are precious and should not be
wasted since security officers have started killing protesters. Sit tight heads
of state are found lurking in most African countries due to greed and naked
pursuit of power. We expect other concerned groups and individuals from other African countries
to ask AU to act without delay. Rwanda genocide is still fresh in our memories.
We will review and take appropriate action.
