Hundreds of millions naira worth relief materials donated to the Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camp in Adamawa State have disappeared, amidst allegation that the items were diverted by top government officials.

When journalists inquired on Friday evening from the Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Dr. Mohammed Amin Suleiman, about the total amount of items Nigeria Customs donated, he said, there are no records to show any donations from Customs to the state government.

It would be recalled that four policemen attached to Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Mr. Martins Babale were last year arrested and detained at the Police Headquarters for stealing over 200 bags of rice, 58 cartons of vegetable oil and other relief materials stored in the private residence of the Deputy Governor, who is the chairman of the state emergency agency.

When some stakeholders asked the Governor, Mohammed Bindow, to investigate why such relief materials would be in the private residence of his deputy, the matter was swept under the carpet.

Suleiman, receiving another batch of relief materials from Nigeria Customs, said his team would ensure the items are used judiciously.

He claimed the recent flood in the state has displaced over 2,000 families who are now in IDPs camps.

While handing over the relief materials, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mohammed Bappa Usman, who represented the Customs Comptroller General, said the donation is in compliance with the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to donate all perishable seized goods to the IDPs in the north-east.
