Commissioner representing Human Rights for North Central zone at the Police Service Commission (PSC) Rommy Mom has said the inability of the police to effectively curb crime in the society is due to the limited number of police officers.

Mom made the assertion yesterday at Utange while handing over to the Police Commissioner, a police post he built in his community, Ikyo Azande- Utange, in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State. According to Mom, less than 350,000 police personnel are on ground to manage crime in Nigeria, a development, which he said, is grossly inadequate according to world standards, noting too that Ushongo LGA has just eighteen police officers.

While urging the Commissioner of Police to urgently post officers to make use of the office complex, he also advised the public to always provide information to the police to enable them curb crime and urged traditional rulers, clergy and other illustrious sons of Utange to contribute their quota for the development of the community, even as he warned the youths against involvement into crimes to avoid being prosecuted. Mon further pledged to empower the vigilante group in the area to enable them assist the police in carrying out their duties.

In his remarks, chairman of Ushongo Local Government Area, John Moughsha expressed gratitude over the gesture stating that the establishment of police post in the area will help address the security challenges being faced there.
