Executive Secretary of NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf

A Police team was yesterday deployed at the headquarters of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Jabi District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja following a protest by NHIS workers.

The police officers arrived at the agency’s premises at 6am to checkmate the NHIS workers who have been protesting against the reinstatement of the Executive Secretary, Prof Usman Yusuf.

He had been suspended for allegedly misappropriating about N1.9 billion.

Speaking at the NHIS, Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Razaq Omomeji, said police presence would not deter the workers from their peaceful protest and urged members not to be intimidated.

He insisted that Yusuf has a case to answer and should therefore, go and clear himself with the anti-graft agencies.

Omomeji alleged that some people have been mobilised to stage a counter protest in support of Yusuf’s reinstatement

He told The Guardian that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has carried out an independent investigation on Yusuf and called on the commission release its findings.

He said: “You can’t be under investigation and still preside over a public office. Yusuf needs to clear himself.

“The ICPC has carried out an independent investigation on him and ought to have come out with their findings. I do not know why they are still keeping it.”
