Banking activities were yesterday disrupted for about an hour at one of the new generation banks in Calabar as soldiers and policemen engaged in a free-for-all. Initially, the fight was between a soldier and four policemen inside the banking hall before a reinforcement of about 40 armed soldiers and mobile policemen stormed the bank.

Teargas and sporadic gunshots were fired into the air while innocent bank customers and passersby at the ever-busy Calabar Road, where the bank is located opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), scampered for safety.

Details on what led to the fight could not be ascertained but some customers in the bank who witnessed the initial scuffle said the soldier attempted to shunt the queue in the bank but was stopped by the mobile policemen and in an ensuing argument, the four policemen engaged the soldier in a fight causing confusion and panic in the banking hall.

Canisters of teargas were shot inside the banking hall and outside leading to pandemonium as customers fled from the burning sensation of the gas.
