THE Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the promotion of 41,605 officers, while 51 personnel were dismissed and 56 others punished for established cases of corruption by the management, with the approval of the Police Service Commission.

Also, the Force has awarded educational scholarships to 325 children of officers who were killed while combating insurgency in the northern part of the country.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja at the End of Year CPs (Commissioners Police) Conference. He said these measures were taken are part of the strategic policing plan contained in his vision to reposition the NPF.

Arase said, “between May – November 2015, the anti-corruption enforcement strategy has led to the dismissal of a total of 51 personnel for proven corrupt practices, while another 56 have been handed various punishments.”

He said the volume of reported cases of corruption against police officers led to the establishment of Compliant Response Unit (CRU) to encourage Nigerians to monitor the activities of policemen and hold them accountable for inactions, through real time platforms, available anytime.

According to him, the initiative has since inception in October 2015, received and processed about 1,268 complaints from members of the public.

Giving the breakdown, Arase said he initiated the promotion of 35,000 rank and file who have been on a rank for many years. They include 456 promoted from Constable to Corporal (CPL), 28,530 promoted from CPL to Sergeant (SGT), while 6,443 SGT to Inspectors (Insp), bringing the total to 35,429.

“The figure includes personnel who have consistently risked their lives and courageously confronted insurgents in the Northeast. Most of them have been considered for special promotion.

“In addition, over 5,184 traffic wardens who have remained on the same position over the years have also been promoted, while 995 senior officers have been promoted from the ranks of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). Others from the ranks of Inspector to ASP are awaiting approval of the Commission, but this will be released before the end of this year.”
