Gunmen-kill-five-policemenTHE leadership of the Nigerian Police has in the last seven months promoted more than 41,000 of their personnel across the ranks and dismissed 51 others, found to have engaged in acts of corruption.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase made this known in Abuja during the monthly conference with Commissioners of Police yesterday.

Arase said the massive promotion, which according to him is still on going, became necessary as many of the officers had stayed too long on one rank. He added that some of the affected personnel were also promoted for extra ordinary service delivery.

Giving the breakdown, Arase said he initiated the promotion of 35,000 Rank and File who were stagnating on one rank for many years.

They include 456 promoted from Constable to Corporal (CPL); 28,530 promoted from Corporal (CPL) to Sargent (SGT); and 6,443 SGT to Inspectors (INSPS), bringing the total to 35,429.

The figure includes personnel who have consistently risked their lives and courageously confronted insurgents in the North-East. Most of them have been considered for special promotion.
“In addition, over 5,184 traffic Wardens that have remained demotivated and agitated over the years due to rank stagnation have also been promoted, while 995 Senior Officers have been promoted from the ranks of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG),” Arase said.
