Kill bandits in Katsina, arrest suspected armed robbers in Imo

Contrary to the directive that inter-state movement be halted in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo state to prevent transmission of the coronavirus pandemic, passengers travelling from Abidjan, Ivory Coast were yesterday stopped and arrested in Ibadan by men of the Oyo State police command.

The travellers were said to have resisted arrest and attempt by security officers to hand them over to the task force on coronavirus, pleading that they be allowed to enter Ibadan, the state capital.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the development, said: “The people were coming from Abidjan and they were accosted. Efforts are in place to hand them over to the Covid-19 team in Oyo for assessment”.

A raft of condemnations, however, rained on the police by many observers, who alleged that the travellers could not have passed through Lagos or Ogun states without the compromise of the police in those states.

Meanwhile, the police in Katsina State has shot and killed two suspected bandits during a gunfire exchange in the state. The incident, which occurred yesterday at about 2:30 p.m. along Rumah-Jibia road, between Batsari and Jibia local councils, however, saw some members of the bandits escape with gunshot wounds.

Displaying bodies of the bandits, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Gambo Isah, said the bandits, who were in their numbers and riding on motorcycles, stationed themselves on the road, and were robbing vehicle owners.

Isah said that a distress call was received by the police and the Divisional Police Officer of Batsari, Isah Sule, mobilised his men and stormed the area where the bandits were operating.

He said a gunfire exchange ensued in the process, and two of the bandit members were gunned down, while some others sustained injuries from gunshot wounds. He added that those injured managed to escape into the forest and that some police operatives have moved into the bush with the view to apprehending those wounded.

Also, a crack team of operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have arrested a suspected three-man gang of armed robbers operating in Imo State. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Godson Ikeokwu, who confirmed this to The Guardian yesterday, said they were arrested at various locations, adding that investigations were ongoing.

He disclosed their names as James Agonsi, aged 33, of Ndiuchi Arondizuogu; ThankGod Albert, 30, of Ugwunagbo, Abia State; and Chinonso Ezeobi, 29 of Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
