The Ebonyi State police command yesterday said it has arrested a couple that specializes in killing women and selling their babies.

The command said it successfully recovered three children stolen and sold by the couple, Lucky Godwin and Onyinyechi Godwin, which included their biological son, Emmanuel Godwin.

The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, stated this in Abakaliki, the state capital.

Godwin, according to the police boss, usually changes his real name to lure unsuspecting mothers, kill them and make away with their children for trafficking.

He is said to be responsible for the murder of a lady at Crown Garden Hotel along Afikpo road Abakaliki.

The lady, whose names were yet to be ascertained, lodged in the hotel with the suspect and was stabbed to death with a knife, which the gateman gave him.

Godwin, reportedly gave the gateman N30,000 to enable him carry out the murder.

He thereafter stole a two-year-old girl of the deceased and escaped. The lady’s decomposing body was however found days after the murder.

The Commissioner of Police said Godwin also attempted to murder a heavily pregnant woman, Chisom Ugwu, by stabbing her in a bush behind Girls’ High School Azuiyikowu in Abakaliki and also stole her two-year-old baby.

CP Mustapha said: “On December 2, 2018 the manager of Crown Garden Hotel, Mr. Emmanuel Eze, reported that an already decomposing body of an unknown lady was discovered in room 403 of the hotel.

Police operatives visited the scene, evacuated the body to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Professional crime busters of the SCIID were tasked to swing into action and come out with a positive result within 48 hours.

“Before this incident, there was a similar incident that occurred on November 6, 2018 where one Chisom Ugwu, a pregnant woman was found in coma, in a bush behind Azuiyiokwu girl’s high school close to the same hotel. The said woman was stabbed on her neck, abdomen and back.

She was bleeding profusely and was rescued by police operatives and taken to Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, for medical treatment.

“The victim, Mrs. Chisom Ugwu, narrated to the police that she was attacked by one papa Emma who was her co-trader at Mayor Market in Enugu. She further stated that the said Papa Emma lured her to Abakaliki, took her to the above mentioned bush where he attacked and stole her baby before abandoning her.

“While the victim was still receiving treatment in the hospital, intelligence-led investigation took the investigators to Enugu State and Mr. and Mrs. Lucky Godwin, the principal suspects were arrested.

“Lucky narrated how he gruesomely stabbed the pregnant woman, Mrs. Chisom Ugwu, stole her baby girl and sold out to a motherless/orphanage home at Akwukabi Etche in Rivers State. He also admitted that he was responsible for the murder of the lady found at Crown garden hotel Abakaliki.

That he brought the said lady and her two-year-old child from Enugu and they both lodged at Crown garden hotel, where he gave his name as Uchenna in the guest register.

“He alleged that he was assisted by the hotel gateman, one Monday Onwe, who gave him a knife, which he used to murder the said lady andthe same Onwe also kept watching while he escaped with the deceased child.

“The suspects further confessed that he and his wife, Onyinyechi Godwin have also sold their first son, Emmanuel Godwin to one Dr. Arthur Ugo, the owner of AVON hospital, Iguruata Rivers State, at the cost of N200,000.”

CP Mohammed said the three children stolen by the couple, which included their biological child, have been recovered.

Meanwhile, the six-man robbery gang that allegedly killed a member of the House of Assembly, Michael Adedeji, have been arrested by the police.

Adedeji, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker that represented Ekiti southwest constituency II, was shot in the head by the robbers on August 10, 2018 along Onigaari, GRA, Ado Ekiti capital city.

The suspected criminals were paraded by the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti Command, Mr. Asuquo Amba, in Ado Ekiti yesterday.

The suspects, according to the CP, also killed one Kayode Omowaye when they raided OJAS Pleasure Hotels in Oye Ekiti on August 10, 2018.

While parading the suspects, the CP advised criminals making life unbearable for residents of Ekiti to either relocate from the state or get caught.

Those arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Adedeji were Dele Obamoyegun, Idowu Sunday, Adeniyi Wumi, Leye Ojo, Akindanhunsi Damilola and Olaosebikan Babatunde.

Exhibits recovered from them were cut-to-size barrel guns, 17 live cartridges, 75 handsets, seven laptops, cash sum of N147,000, four stolen vehicles, one of them belonging to the late Omowaye, among others.

The CP said the suspects were arrested by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) during a stop and search operation carried out along Ado-Iworoko road.

When interviewed by newsmen, the gang leader, Dele Obamoyegun, said: “We shot him (Adedeji) after robbing him. He did not struggle with us but one of us shot him. I have to confess, we didn’t know he was a lawmaker,” he said.

The police boss said the robbery gang also invaded Afe Babalola University junior staff quarters and snatched a car belonging to one Mrs. Bosede Ojo.

The CP said most disturbing was that Dele’s mother, Bola Obamoyegun, was the one accepting and concealing stolen items for the robbery gang led by his son.
