Police kill kidnap kingpins in Enugu

Police in Enugu yesterday disclosed that they killed some members of a notorious syndicate, which specialises in kidnapping for ransom.

The State Commissioner of Police, Elochukwu Nwodibo, told reporters that the gang, made up of boys, whose ages range from 16 and 21 years, was behind the kidnap cases in Enugu metropolis and other parts of the state.

The police said, the first set of two suspects, led by Etim Amos was responsible for the kidnap of a lawyer, John Abugu, Jane Ekweremadu Brooks
Okwara Sandra Onu, along with her Honda CRV.

The second set of three suspects, led by Nonso Onyebuchi of Obeagu Awgu, according to the police, was behind the kidnap of UK returnee, Chime Edwin, among others.

The police added that Etim Amos and his group were gunned down in a carefully planned operation, at a point along Itu- Calabar road, Uyo, when they tried to escape.

“The gang leader, was said to have been posing as a soldier, and had an army cap on the dashboard of any car he used, in order to deceive people.”

He was said to have been gunned down alongside another gang member, Otunre Nse, while the Honda CRV car, belonging to Mrs Sandra Onu, with which she was abducted was recovered from them.

Also recovered were guns, handsets of victims, fake army ID card, bearing CPl. Etim Henry Amos.

According to the police, the second group, which had Collins Chime, is a relation of one of the kidnapped victims, whose victim was kidnapped and robbed at Umunede, Delta State.

Nwodibo said that the command would continue to do all in its ability to make the state safe for the residents, stressing that though
ransom was paid for the release of the victims, they were made behind the police.
