Police in Enugu nab panel beater, 5 others over alleged car snatching
According to the police, the gang specialised in lodging in hotels to monitor their targeted victims.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Ebere Amaraizu on Monday in Enugu, said the suspects broke into a house at Loma-Linda Estate in Independence Layout, Enugu in the afternoon, in the absence of the occupant.
According to the statement, the suspects, made up of a mechanic, a panel beater and a bank cheque fraudster, were arrested at their hideout in Awka, Anambra state, following an intelligence report.
“They stole some valuables in the apartment and a white Kia car parked at the premises,’’ it said.
The statement said that police investigation took them to Awka, where the 35-year-old panel beater from Aguleri in Anambra state was arrested.
“His arrest helped the police to nab another member of his gang, a 25-year-old mechanic from Mburumbu in Nkanu East local government of Enugu state.
“The panel beater confessed that his work was to receive snatched and stolen vehicles from the group and making such non- recognisable by changing their colors and other instruments.
“The mechanic will work on the engine and construct master keys with which we used to access any vehicle we wish to steal,” it said.
According to the statement, the duo guided the police to nab their kingpin aged 26, from Nkwlle-Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, and another member of the gang from Ezinifite Nnewi.
They also helped in arresting another who hailed from Delta state, but was picked in a hotel room at Garden Avenue, Enugu.
“The suspects lodged in the hotel for many days and from there they go to clubs and social parties”, to monitor their prospective victims.
Similarly, two other suspects from Imo and Rivers states were nabbed by operatives of the Anti- Kidnap unit for snatching a Toyota Camry car, 2008 model with registration number, KJA 139 DL at gunpoint.
