Police boss vows to end neighborhood crimes, gangsterism in Lagos Island

Edgal Imohimi

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, at the weekend assured Lagos Island residents that he would bring an end to neighborhood crimes of gangsterism and cultism prevalent in the area.

The police boss gave the assurance during a town-hall stakeholders security meeting hosted by the Area ‘A’ Commander, ACP J.O. Akinyede at Lion Building, Lagos.

“We continue to have neighborhood crimes and cult-related violence and for this reason I have with immediate effect ordered Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to reach out to traditional rulers, community leaders and other voluntary groups. We will set up vigilance groups to reach out to inner streets and neighborhoods to restore peace in the communities.

“I know we have had the vigilance groups before but we will give it legal functionality by inviting young men interested in community policing to come forward following which they will be profiled and attached with armed policemen for night patrol. I have also ordered raids on uncompleted buildings and markets to make sure they are not turned into havens of criminal hideout,” he said.

While calling for a change in the nation’s policing strategies, Edgal said today’s policing derives its success solely on the cooperation and support of the people in the state. He advised parents and guardians to counsel their wards in their community.

“Henceforth, any cult-related activities that include the open use of firearms, in any part of the state; would call for a counter attack from the police.”
He disclosed that there were designated numbers Lagos residents can use to report any suspicious movement. “This call lines are available 24 hours and managed by the command’s citizen complain hot centre. You may speak any of the three major Nigerian languages including English and you will get response.

“More so, any police patrol bus you see is a mini police station, no need to look for police station. They are stationed there to attend to you and they must,” he added. The numbers are 08067945296, 08063025274, 08063104759, 08113615350, 08096283148, 08089781657, 08126404930, 08081426895, 080962823173 and 08113683077.
