Police detectives in Illah community near Asaba, Delta State, have arrested a 33-year-old housewife identified as Mrs. Monica (surname withheld) for allegedly selling her two-year-old baby for N450,000.

The suspect, a native of Mbasi in Imo State, was alleged to have sold her baby to a couple, who had been married for many years in Lagos without a child in order to offset a loan she took to start a business.

Police officers at the Illah Police Division, who did not want their names in the print, said the suspect was arrested after a tip-off from her close friend, who claimed she was shortchanged in the “deal” after she had introduced her to the couple.

Sources in Illah said the suspect sojourned in the community two years ago with the baby, claiming she was married to a man, who allegedly abandoned her and the baby in Owerri, and was helped by a friend to relocate to Illah, where she has been living before the bubble burst.

She was said to have taken a loan of N100,000 from a “local daily contribution” meeting with interest and unfortunately, the loan and interest could not be paid on the stipulated date, leaving her indebted to the tune of N300,000.

Efforts to speak to the police imagemaker in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, was not successful, as she did not pick her calls at the time of filing this report, but an officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said investigation was ongoing, adding that the suspect was helping the police at the CID Department.
