Those killing innocent people in the country under any guise have been advised not to underestimate the power of God to deal ruthlessly with any one who unjustly takes the life of a fellow being.

Those killing innocent people in the country under any guise have been advised not to underestimate the power of God to deal ruthlessly with any one who unjustly takes the life of a fellow being.

The new Anglican Bishop of the Diocese on the Coast, Ondo State, Rt. Rev. Oluseyi Pirisola, who gave the warning, said: “It is lamentable that some people no longer place value on human life which only God can create. The rise in the cases of unjust killing and displacement of people across the country is appalling. It is double jeopardy for people who are struggling to live under a poor state of the economy to, at the same time, suffer unprovoked attacks and killing by those who are thirsty for blood and do not fear their creator.

“That God is slow to anger should not be misconstrued as lack of capacity to avenge the killing of innocent people. The government should do everything possible to stop callous disregard for human life in the country. We should learn to be our brothers’ keepers, and embrace dialogue whenever there is conflict between us and our neighbours, rather than cut short their lives.”

Pirisola, who spoke with The Guardian after his enthronement as the new bishop of the diocese at the Cathedral Church of Ebenezer in Ilutitun, urged government at all levels to initiate policies that will create employment opportunities for the unemployed youths as a strategy to disabuse them of indulging in criminal acts in order to get rich.

He lauded efforts at restoring electricity supply to Ondo South, which had been cut off from the national grid since 2014 and urged completion of the job before the end of the year. The cleric also called for repair of the bad portions of the roads in Okitipupa and environs to prevent mishaps that could lead to loss of lives.

At the event, attended by eminent Nigerians, including Gen. Olu Bajowa, Chief Paddy Arikawe, Chaiman Caretaker Committee of Okitipupa Local Council, Abayomi Adesanya, Senator Boluwaji Kunlere, Evangelist Aiyenuyo, wife of the bishop, Olusina and traditional rulers, the cleric craved more action against poverty in the country.

Also in attendance were former Dean, Church of Nigeria and Anglican Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adebola Ademowo; Bishop of Lagos, Rt. Rev Humphrey Olumakaiye, and bishops of sister dioceses, among others.
