Dokpesi: ‘No Price Is Too Much To Pay For Unity’

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, declared yesterday that he would not compromise his integrity, political interests and followership in the ongoing reconciliation in his party.

Sheriff made this declaration even as the reconciliatory committee, headed by Prof Jerry Gana, had given him 48 hours within which to consider and indicate whether he would accept the concessions made to him ‎as part of the peace moves.

On his part, a chairmanship aspirant, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, ‎said no price was too much to pay to ensure that peace and unity is restored in the PDP.

Receiving a delegation of Yobe State PDP factional leaders, Sheriff stated the political structures established by the PDP during his tenure as national chairman must be retained.

He equally disclosed that some of the political misfortunes of the PDP in last year’s general elections were due to the failure of former President Goodluck Jonathan to heed advice.‎

Sheriff said: “Members of the BoT are coming to see me. Even last night, they came to meet me at my place and the governors are also meeting with me, but that does not mean that we are going to agree on anything that will affect our integrity, followership and our political interests.

“As some of you rightly said, ‎some of them were ashamed to identify with the party. Now the PDP has become a strong party, everybody is looking up to PDP and we will not be distracted. This a party, as I rightly said, that must be returned to the owners.” ‎

Restating his resolve to retain his political structures, Sheriff said: “I heard someone talking about the congress in Yobe and I must say that as far as I am concerned, the congress has been held, no one can reverse it. It is not even an issue to negotiate.

“The only states the NEC of our party approved that fresh congresses be conducted are Oyo, Lagos, Anambra, Kebbi and Sokoto.”

Returning his nomination form to the party secretariat in Abuja yesterday evening, Dokpesi said the reconciliation efforts by the BoT were commendable moves that should be embraced.

He expressed readiness to abide by whatever decision taken on whether or not the convention would hold.
