PDP insists on holding party convention

• No court order stopped exercise, says Sheriff
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said it would hold its National Convention in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, tomorrow as planned.

The party said all arrangements were already in place for the event.

PDP National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, who confirmed this to The Guardian in an interview, stated that no court order had stopped ‎conduct of the convention.

Sheriff, speaking through his media assistant, Alhaji Innua Bwala, said the court order only stopped the election of some national officers but did not stop the convention.

“I can confirm to you that the convention is holding ‎as planned. Nothing has changed. No court stopped the PDP from holding any convention. It only stopped the conduct of election into some national offices.

“There are other items in the agenda of the convention apart from election of party officers. For those other items in the agenda, the convention will hold on Saturday,” he insisted.

Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, had last Tuesday said the event would hold as scheduled, noting that any shift in date might amount to not having a National Working Committee (NWC) in place, a situation he termed dangerous.

Wike insisted that due process had been followed in the congresses held so far leading to the national convention.

Reacting to insinuations that a Federal High Court, Lagos had issued an order stopping the event, the governor said as the chairman of the organising panel, he was yet to be served any such order.

Wike noted that the said suit was filed on the premise of impersonation, hence the national chairman has written to the court informing it of the fraud.
