Nigeria’s opposition party, People’s Democratic Party, has demanded a “wide range” investigation of an assassination attempt on the life of the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his family.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Ekweremadu, his wife and son survived an assassination attempt at his Apo Quarters in the country’s capital, Abuja.

“This latest attack raises our fears that certain forces, who have been hostile to Senator Ekweremadu’s political standing, are still bent on silencing him at all cost,” PDP’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The PDP demands an immediate wide-range probe into this particular attack as well as an assurance from the Federal Government on the safety of the Deputy Senate President.” he added.

PDP alleged that there has not been tangible investigation over the similar attack on the life of the lawmaker in November 17, 2015, rather the opposition party claims the Senator has been “a subject of unrelenting harassment and attacks on his person and office since his emergence as Deputy Senate President.”

“The PDP family is, therefore, worried about the relentless attack on the Deputy Senate President, which we believe is part of a scheme to silence him,” the statement said

“Though that attack was reported to the authorities, there have been no investigations by the security agencies.”
