Party urges aggrieved members to embrace peace

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who emerged from the convention of the party in Port Harcourt, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, appears to have received the nod of the of the Board of Trustees (BoT) yesterday when an expanded meeting ‎of party’s organs rose from a meeting asking the former National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff, to drop the court case he instituted against the party.

It also asked every other group that had cases in courts against the party to withdraw them to allow for successful peace process ‎initiated at the meeting.

The Secretary of the board, Ambassador Ojo Maduekwe, who read out the resolutions reached at the end of the meeting, said a committee had been set up to reach out to all contending groups, including Sheriff, to consolidate on the reconciliatory process.

It was also announced at the meeting that the Ibrahim Mantu-led concerned stakeholders’ group has embraced the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee.

But while Makarfi returned later in the evening to attend the expanded meeting of PDP organs, Sheriff was absent.

The BoT Chairman, Walid Jibril, however, said that the relevant committee would reach out to Sheriff to pacify him and make him embrace the path of peace adopted.

Maduekwe said that the combined meetings asked all warring groups to sign undertaking to make peace and not to involve external agents like the courts in matters relating to the internal workings of the party.

In another development, Makarfi has said the misinformation going round in the print, electronic and Internet media that Justice I.N. Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos, made an order dissolving the caretaker committee under his leadership was not true.

He described the insinuation as reckless misrepresentation of facts and distortion of information by certain aggrieved members of the party who were out to mislead the public and pull the PDP down, saying “no member of the PDP is bigger than the party. No office, person, organ or institution within the party is bigger than the national convention, which is the supreme organ of the party with powers to even dissolve the party itself.”

In a statement yesterday, Makarfi said Justice Buba did not make an order dissolving the caretaker committee, saying that an order of court could only be made if the court is presented with either a motion ex-parte or motion on notice, which the court hears and makes appropriate order(s) as deemed necessary. No court makes an order not sought.

He, however, said that the only order that is direct, specific and subsisting on the PDP national convention was that of Justice A.M. Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.
