A serving judge in Delta State, Justice Excel Timi, and former Commissioner for Education, Dr. Veronica Ogbuagu, have identified sex as the major challenge affecting children in the society today, saying more enlightenment on the issue was needed. The duo spoke during separate lectures delivered at a seminar organised by a group, Make Your Life Count (MYLC) in Effurun, Uvwie Local Council Area of Delta State. They said sex, which is now rampant in society has led to several teenage pregnancies.

Both speakers agree that girls should adopt decision-making skills, self-esteem, knowledge, respect for constituted authorities as well as being self-dependent to stay away from unholy relationship with the opposite sex.

They blamed parents for the rampant sex in society, and urged parents to be more aggressive in guiding their children, especially the girl-child.

Justice Timi said: “Sex is one of the bane of our society and the greatest issue affecting our children. Most of the divorce cases I handle in court are due to sex. You see marriages of six months, one year, two, or even 20 years falling apart because of sex.

Organiser of the event and founder of MYLC, Dr. Cyril Olomukoro, said sex out of marriage is a distraction as a Christian. He said: “For example, a young girl had sex and became pregnant. Either way it goes, if she wants to keep the pregnancy, it might affect her schooling and also bring reproach to her from the family and outsiders or she decides to abort it, could lead to more fatal consequences.”
