NIMC registers over 20m Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that 21,360, 000 people have been registered under the national identity scheme.The NIMC Director General, Aliyu Aziz, who disclosed this yesterday said those captured had been given their National Identification Number (NIN).

He said the drive was in line with the commission’s target of registering 28 million Nigerians in its database, by the end of December 2017.Aziz stressed that the figure was reached on September 6, adding that the commission had also opened more enrolment centres to bring the number to 805 across the 36 states and Abuja.

He said NIMC now has 556 active centres and was planning to activate the dormant centres in the other 218 council areas in the country.He explained that the NIMC has continued to record exponential growth in its database, despite its challenges.

The director general said the database had a little above seven million people in its database when he took over in November 2015.He said the commission would seek the enforcement of the national identity
