Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to immortalise the late Elizabeth Ochanya, by renaming a primary school after her.

Ortom, who also directed SUBEB to upgrade facilities in the school, gave the directive yesterday in Makurdi, the state capital.

A polytechnic lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja and his son Victor, had serially raped Ochanya until she died.

The governor said the primary school to be renamed falls within the immediate community of the late Ochanya.

He also disclosed that the State House of Assembly has approved the proposal sent to it by the executive to obtain N40 billion bond to execute key projects in the state.

He said the government is also sourcing funds to ensure that salary arrears owed to workers are paid.

Ortom explained that it was the desire of his government to ensure that salaries were cleared and life changing projects executed, even in the face of lean resources.

He further disclosed that the state government has taken N3.5 billion loan from United Bank for Africa (UBA) to construct township roads.

He said streets in major towns like Makurdi, Gboko, Otukpo and Katsina-Ala, will soon be given face-lift.

According to the governor, part of the money has also been provided to enable completion of some ongoing projects, including Tarka-Igbor road, and Oshigbudu-Obagaji roads.

He expressed dissatisfaction with activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for attacking perceived enemies.

Ortom said he remains the poorest governor in the country, adding that he has nothing to hide and would offer himself to be probed, if desired.

He said: “The EFCC has become a department of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Nobody came after me when I was in the APC. But now, the EFCC is probing even the funds we used to bury our paramount ruler.

“If we have done anything, let them prosecute us, but if it is only for the reason that we have moved to another political party, then we cannot accept it.”

The governor also revealed that the Federal Government deducted N3.3 from the last Paris Club Loan refunds to pay UBEC counterpart funds for the execution of projects in primary schools.

He explained that due to the deduction, Benue is expecting the sum of 6.6 billion to be released, to begin projects in the schools.
