OPD seeks police collaboration to tackle domestic violence, sexual abuse

The Office of the Public Defender (OPD), yesterday called for collaboration with the Lagos State of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal in addressing the alarming rise on domestic, sexual violence, child abuse and various form of abuses in the State.

The Office of the Public Defender (OPD), yesterday called for collaboration with the Lagos State of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal in addressing the alarming rise on domestic, sexual violence, child abuse and various form of abuses in the State. Director of the Public Defender, Mrs.Olayinka Adeyemi,, who made the call during a courtesy visit to the CP Office in Ikeja, said such collaboration with relevant stakeholders, like Nigeria Police Force is very key in carrying out the mandate of the Office effectively and efficiently without any hitch.

She stated that OPD was not only happy to partner with the Commissioner of Police but eager to work as a team to effectively reduce to barest minimum level the issue of domestic, sexual violence and all sort of abuses in the State.

While commending the Commissioner of Police efforts to reduce crime in the State, Mrs. Adeyemi said that the State Government has zero tolerance for domestic, sexual and other forms of violence/abusesin the State.

The Director appealed to the Commissioner of Police to be there for the Office whenever the services of the Nigeria Police Force is needed or requested for. Responding, the Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal said, “If you look at the society now very critically, the Office of the Public Defender is perhaps some of the most important Office because we are
not only talking about fighting violence/crimes alone but building a save societies and when issues that relates to the rights of the citizen are not taken care of that society cannot be achieved”.

“I know that OPD has a very vital role to play and since I was appointed the Commissioner of Police from the onset, I have been be working very closely with the Office that synergy and cooperation would continue and would also be deepened”. He gave the assurance that his Office is ready and available to support the Office of the Public Defender particularly when the Office is carrying out its duties and needs the support of the Nigeria Police Force.
