PLANS have been concluded by enemies of the Ondo State government to “embark on character assassination, outright falsehood and massive propaganda” to undermine it, the Mimiko administration alleged yesterday.

Information Commissioner Kayode Akinmade in a statement issued in Akure said the government has uncovered the planned attack which has been scripted to begin with a series of petitions to be written against the person of Governorr Olusegun Mimiko and his government.

Akinmade stated that following several failed attempts by adversaries to indict the governor through petitions written against him to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), a meeting was held in Abuja in the house of a prominent local politician recently where a lawyer was assigned to write frivolous petitions against Dr. Mimiko using false allegations, especially as it concerned the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission(OSOPADEC)

According to Akinmade, the lawyer is expected to begin his ‘assignment’ with a petition against the governor over what “the meeting said should be another framed-up allegation on the spending of funds allocated to the agency, adding that “checks have revealed the identity of the hired lawyer as an Abuja-based who works for the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, which explains his choice for the hatchet job.”

He “was one of the lawyers who appeared for the EFCC Chairman at the hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, on the alleged misappropriation of funds against the anti-graft agency’s boss in Abuja last week.”

He said “a meeting also held at the Lagos Airport Hotel a few days ago where lawyers and rights activists were recruited for a massive campaign against Dr Mimiko on radio, television, social media, and newspapers because according to the conveners, Mimiko must be rubbished for the PDP to lose its relevance in the Southwest in particular and the nation and every means must be used to achieve this.”

Akinmade said Mimiko has become the subject of attack because of his role as a rallying point of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the country.
