Delta State Government has said it will honour prominent Delta citizens, who contributed to the growth and development of the state as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of its creation on August 27.

Chairman, Central Organising Committee for the Delta at 30 Celebration, Kingsley Emu, made this known at a media briefing in Asaba as part of activities to mark the anniversary.

He said the state would recognise outstanding Delta people in the Lifetime Achievers, Posthumous, Academics and Sports categories.

While Umukoro Mowoe, James Otobo and Dennis Osadebay would receive the posthumous award, Edwin Clark, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Jim Ovia and Tony Elumelu, among others, would receive Life Achievers Award.

Emu, who is Chief Economic Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, said that Delta at 30 came with a lot of pomp and fulfilment, as the state had retained its identity since being part of the defunct Mid-Western Region and Bendel State.

He said the state had consistently performed well in sports since its creation adding that Delta had always been unique and significant among the states of the federation.

He said: “The weeklong event will feature a stakeholders’ Interactive Forum, Children Talent Display, Youth Variety Show and an interdenominational thanksgiving service at the St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral, Asaba on Friday to be followed by a Gala and Award Night.”

ALSO, Okowa, yesterday, congratulated the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III on his 65th birthday. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Olisa Ifeajika in Asaba, the governor commended the Sultan for promoting peace, unity and religious harmony in the country.

He said that Nigerians remained grateful to the Sultan for his contributions to peace building, co-existence and religious tolerance among Nigerians.

Okowa pointed out that Abubakar’s wise counseling on national issues had continued to help in keeping leaders and followers on track and stimulating genuine interest in nation-building.
