The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Godwin Obaseki has pledged to support journalists in their duties if elected in the governorship polls.

He made the promise when he paid a thank-you visit to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ)’s Press Centre in Benin City.

Obaseki said his visit was to, among other things, thank them for the honorary membership award earlier given to him by the union.

He said the support he has received from journalists has shown that they are partners in progress.

While assuring them of unhindered access if he becomes governor, he said: “In and out of government, you will always have my support.”

Obaseki warned against blood shedding in the name of election.

According to him, “It was painful that the election was postponed, but we still feel that the shift was justified. We need people to vote, so why shed their blood for election?”

The candidate added that he has no fear that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would win the election on September 28.

He promised to ensure that the press centre is provided with a seamless Internet connection. “Internet is very critical to your work as journalists, because without it, you cannot work. I will ensure that there is constant connectivity when I become governor.”

He pledged to donate a bigger generating set and a bus to assist the union’s operations.

“We are moving from the politics of oil to the politics of development and that calls for the people’s minds to be opened. In that onerous task, the media has a key role to play.”

“The strategy of lying to the people would be broken, Governor Adams Oshiomhole has started it and we will continue from where he would stop,” he added.

Meanwhile, a pro-Obaseki group, The Green Movement, has restated that the recent arrest of 54 suspected militants has justified the election’s postponement.
