‘No significant changes in Buhari’s assets after four years’

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari’s asset forms contained changes from the 2015 declaration, but not significant ones, a presidential spokesman has said.

“The forms, as signed by the President and sworn to before a Judge of Abuja High Court showed no significant changes in assets as declared in 2015 by him,” Buhari’s spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement Tuesday night.

“There are no new houses, no new bank accounts at home and abroad and there are no new shares acquired,” Shehu added.

Shehu revealed that the president submitted documents detailing his assets were submitted by Sarki Abba, senior special assistant, household and domestic affairs, to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), an anti-graft agency responsible for checking corrupt practices in the Nigerian Public service.

In 2015, Buhari said owned five homes in Daura, Kano and Abuja, and also 2 mud houses in his village. Apart from his houses, Buhari owns 2 undeveloped plots of land in Kano and Port Harcourt.

The president said he has an orchard and a ranch with 270 head of cattle, 25 sheep, 5 horses, a variety of birds and a number of economic trees in them.

In 2015, his other assets include stocks in 3 publicly listed companies – Berger Paints, a Nigerian manufacturer of paints and commercial banks Union Bank and Skye Bank. In terms of cash, he had less than N30 million.

“The documents also showed that the retired General uses a number of cars, two of which he bought from his savings and the others supplied to him by the federal government in his capacity as former Head of State,” Shehu said in a September 2015 statement. “The rest were donated to him by well-wishers after his jeep was damaged in a Boko Haram bomb attack on his convoy in July 2014.”
