Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was allegedly spotted praying in Jerusalem, Israel, yesterday.

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was allegedly spotted praying in Jerusalem, Israel, yesterday.

In a video circulated by his members, the IPOB leader was seen adorning Israeli attire used for prayers, while holding a prayer book.

A statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of the IPOB, Emma Powerful, which confirmed the development, said it was the beginning of the struggle for Biafra independence.

The terse message read: “Fellow Biafrans, friends of Biafra, enemies of Biafra, men and women of goodwill and of good conscience across the world, we wish to reliably inform you that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu prayed today at the Wailing Wall in the Holy City of David in Jerusalem, live on Facebook, today (yesterday) October 19.

“Biafrans, be resolute, this is the beginning of struggle for Biafra independence. We thank Almighty God (Chukwu Okike Abiama) for his protection and safety.”

Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, said his brother was alive.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Emmanuel, in a telephone conversation with newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, said he received the information through an online video broadcast yesterday, adding: “I can boldly confirm to you that the person in the video is my brother. He was praying in the video that we saw.

“We are happy that he is still alive and we will try to establish communication with him.”

Emmanuel said the news was received with wild jubilation in their family and Isiama Afaraukwu community in general, noting: “Everybody in my family and the entire community is celebrating and thanking God since we received the news.”

He said that the Deputy Director of the organisation, Uche Ejiofor, also confirmed the online video report when the family spoke with him on cellphone.

The community declared Nnamdi and his parents missing in the aftermath of the September 14, last year’s alleged invasion of their country home by members of the Nigeria Army’s Operation Python Dance II.

The operation was deployed to dislodge the group in Umuahia, its operational headquarters. The Federal Government described IPOB as a terrorist organisation and proscribed its activities in the country.

The IPOB leader is standing trial at a Federal High Court in Abuja and his absence has stalled proceedings, with the court summoning those who stood as his sureties for his bail, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Immanuel El-Shalom and Tochukwu Uchendu.
