NLC issues ultimatum, threatens strike action

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Public Service Negotiation Council (JNC) have threatened to embark on a 3-day warning strike if the state government fails to resolve the lingering salary crisis affecting workers in Kano.

Speaking to reporters at the NUJ Press Centre, Kano NLC chairman, Kabiru Ado Minjibir, said the decision was imperative in view of the protracted inconsistencies in payment of monthly salaries to workers, as well as deducting their hard-earned income without justification. 

He decried the non-payment of outstanding eight months salary of the Primary Healthcare Management Board (PHCMB), regularised staff recruited in 2015, amounting to N532.4 million. He also bemoaned the non-payment of outstanding eight and four month’s salary of Kano State Senior Secondary Management Board (KSSSSMB) amounting to over N220 million.

They called on the government to stop engaging consultants on salary issues but to handover to qualified civil servants. They challenged the government to clarify the basis upon which the sum of N367. 50 and N168. 00 is being deducted from the monthly salaries of workers and pensioners, respectively. “If the government fails to respond positively to the aforementioned issues between now and 5th March, 2018, we would be left with no option than to embark on a 3-day warning strike, “ he said.
