Lagos discharges 98-year-old coronavirus survivor, 25 others

A Nigerian-born professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Director, University College London (UCL) Institute for Global Health, United Kingdom (UK), Ibrahim Abubakar, has emerged top among 50 leading biomedical and health scientists elected to the British Academy of Medical Sciences.

The Academy of Medical Sciences is the independent body in the UK representing the diversity of medical science and meant to advance biomedical and health research and its translation into benefits for society, while the elected Fellows are the UK’s leading medical scientists from hospitals, academics, industry and public service.

Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, on twitter, congratulated Abubakar, saying the new fellows have been chosen for their outstanding contributions to advancing biomedical science through world-leading research discoveries, running national science communication, engagement programmes and translating scientific advances into benefits for patients and members of the public.

Ihekweazu twitted: “Deeply proud of my brother, friend & colleague @ProfIAbubakar, who has been chosen as one of 50 Fellows in the prestigious Academy of Medical Sciences. His contribution to our work at @NCDCgov has been incredibly helpful, including opportunities for members of staff.”

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed that a 98-year old woman and oldest COVID19 patient was discharged, as she joined 25 others, comprising 13 males and 12 females.

He said they were discharged yesterday from our isolation centres after testing negative for COVID19, bringing the number of successfully managed and discharged patients to 528.
