Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has lamented that the number of students it admitted this year fell from the 5,646 of the previous year to 4,350 in the current year.

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has lamented that the number of students it admitted this year fell from the 5,646 of the previous year to 4,350 in the current year.

MOUAU Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Francis Otunta, who disclosed this during the 26th matriculation ceremony for 4,350 new students, said “this figure is grossly inadequate based on the teeming population of candidates seeking admission into the university.”He explained that the shortfall in the number of admission seekers into MOUAU was caused by the delisting of some courses in some colleges in compliance with directive by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He said the directive was that specialist universities should revert to their core mandate in establishment of programmes, which (directive) he disclosed, constrained MOUAU to offer only agriculture-based courses. Beside this NUC directive, the Vice Chancellor cited another frustrating factor he said was “a series of conditionality in which candidates who applied for 2018/2019 admission into any Nigerian university were to upload their O’Level SSCE results to JAMB portal. So, many candidates that lacked knowledge of this new development missed the admission already granted them by MOUAU.”

The VC urged the matriculating students to abide by the provisions of the oath and begin immediately to strive to study hard, shun vices in order to graduate within the record time.
