Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State Chapter, Revd. Joseph Hayab, was summoned to the state police command yesterday for questioning over his comments on killings and kidnapping of pastors and other Christian leaders in the state.

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State Chapter, Revd. Joseph Hayab, was summoned to the state police command yesterday for questioning over his comments on killings and kidnapping of pastors and other Christian leaders in the state.
Hayab was also quizzed over the attempt to mobilise Christian leaders through a questionnaires said to have been served to churches, urging them for information on how insecurity has impacted on Christians in the state.

A source at the CAN secretariat in the , who claimed to be one of the officials that accompanied Hayab to the state police command, said: “The Commissioner of Police, Ali Aji Janga, invited our chairman and we all decided to follow him to the police headquarters for interrogation on the issues of security challenge in the state.“We spoke our minds and the chairman defended himself on the allegations put forward by the police on his comments about kidnapping in the state.

“We said that our purpose as CAN officials in the state is to defend our members, particularly under the security threats and the kidnapping and killing of our pastors. And we told him that when the Ulamas first cried out about the kidnap of one of their leaders in the state, the government quickly intervened. And now, Christians pastors are being kidnapped, do they expect us not to cry out despite that government has not come to our aid?”

When The Guardian contacted Hayab for comment on the interrogation by the police yesterday, he said: “Yes, it is true that I was invited by the commissioner of police over my comments on the insecurity in the state.“ I also told the police about the questionnaire we served to churches to inform us about their experiences in their areas. We are here to defend the interest of our members here in Kaduna State.

“We will continue to defend our members and speak against all forms of injustices meted against.”Meanwhile, when contacted for comments on the police interrogation of the CAN officials, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Yakubu Sabo, could not respond to several telephone calls as of the time of filing in this report.
