Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Chief Victor Umeh, among other chieftains of the party, miraculously escaped death, following the collapse of the podium mounted for speakers at Abagana, Njikoka Council, venue of the party leader’s tour of the state.

The podium was set to host the governor and a few others as part of his ongoing APGA Thank You Tour of the 21 councils, where he was also billed to canvass for votes from the electorate for the party’s candidates in the state and national assembly seats in the elections.

It was gathered that some chieftains of the party relocated to the podium for identification with the governor, but their weight forced the stage to cave in, leaving the governor to stand on the iron steps for few minutes before he left in anger.

An eyewitness told The Guardian, however, that no one was seriously injured and attributed the cause of the collapse to the pressure from party chieftains, who jostled for attention in the small space at the fragile, elevated makeshift platform.

The eyewitness, a native of Abagana, who gave his name simply as Nnaemeka, alleged that Obiano hurriedly left the scene.

Uche Nworah, Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Services (ABS) confirmed there was no injury arising from the accident, saying: “Nobody was injured and the event continued immediately.

“The speakers, including the governor, stood on the aluminum steps and addressed the crowd. The event ended on a happy and glorious note.”
