The Federal Government is partnering the Republic of India on space research, peaceful use of atomic energy and biotechnology in the country.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, stated yesterday in Abuja, when the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, paid him a visit, that the partnership would improve the relationship between both countries.

Nigeria, Onu said, is building an innovative society, so that the citizens can use their knowledge to produce goods and services, while commending the Indian government for training Nigerian scientists and its success on anti-satellite missiles.

Earlier, Thakur had said that India was looking forward to cooperation on skills development, peaceful application of space technology in agriculture, and innovation in many areas.

Other areas of interest, according to the envoy, are resource mapping and the application of science and technology to industrial growth and development.

The minister also said that the ministry was working hard to ensure that the children inherit a self-reliant nation.

Onu disclosed this during a courtesy visit by members of the Neighbourhood Children’s Parliament in his office yesterday in Abuja.

According to him, children are the nation’s greatest resource, and the ministry will spare no resource in supporting them.

He added that his visit to schools was to encourage students to embrace STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

“We want our children to inherit a nation they will be proud of wherever they go; a Nigeria where extreme poverty has been defeated. Children would make outstanding contributions to Nigeria; both male and female students are capable of making great achievements,” he said.

He further charged the students to remain resolute and creative towards invention and innovation to create wealth for themselves, and in the long run for the nation, noting that “the Federal Government is determined to build a brighter future for Nigerians,” particularly the execution of the Executive Order 5, which is a revolutionary document that will turn around the fortunes of the country.
