Shagali emerges Kaduna Assembly speaker, Rurum heads Kano
AMINU Abdullahi Shagali (Sabon Gari) has been elected speaker of Kaduna House of Assembly and Gwarzo John Audu his deputy, after the new session was proclaimed on Monday.
Their election followed the proclamation of the new session by the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Umma Aliyu Hikima, at the instance of Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai, who was absent.
Addressing the 33-member House after their swearing in, Shagali pledged to sustain the confidence reposed in him and also work assiduously to make laws for good governance of the state, adding that the “concept of majority or minority” would not hold sway under his leadership, but oneness.
Similarly, the representative of Rano constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has emerged speaker of the eighth assembly, which was inaugurated on Monday, while Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari (Makoda constituency) retained his deputy speaker position.
Meanwhile, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has forwarded to the House a list of 20 nominees for screening as commissioners, including the serving President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Muhammad Garba.
In his acceptance speech, he pledged to run an open door policy that could engender a more vibrant legislature, just as he encouraged members to fulfill all their campaign promises pre-election.
Rurum promised that the House would assiduously commit to harmonious relationship with the executive and the judiciary to deepen the tenets of democracy, adding: “I would also like to assure the people of Kano State and our teeming supporters of our sincere commitment to fulfilling the promises we made during electioneering campaigns.
“As the representative of the people, we shall be resolute and focused and continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people towards the general improvement of their welfare, so as to ensure good governance in the state.”
