INEC to conduct mock elections in Nasarawa

THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will conduct mock elections in twelve selected states in the country with Nasarawa chosen as one of the states in the north central geopolitical zone.

  Consequent upon this, Kokona local government area of the state has been chosen for the exercise slated for March7 this year.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Umar Danyaya stated this yesterday in Lafia, the state capital, during hismeeting with stakeholders on field testing of the card reader.

  Danyaya said, following the rescheduled  2015 general elections, the commission has selected twelve states across the federation, two per geo-political zone, to have the card reader tested on the field.

  “The commission’s main purpose for this proactive initiative is to demonstrate that the card reader innovation is practicable during the polls. At the moment, the commission is embarking on public enlightenment alongside testing of the card reader.”

    He further stated that during the mock-election, there would be verification of bio-metrics of the voter via their Permanent  Voter’s Cards, PVCs, as the card reader would also be subjected to varying weather conditions with a view to demonstrate how the card readerwould be adoptable to the changing weather conditions.

The REC further expalined that Back-up Card Readers to be used for the testing exercise have been configured even as staff of the commission would be used as poll workers during the mock-election.

He asked stakeholders to sensitize and mobilize registered voters of Garaku registration area to go to their respective voting centers on March 7, 2015 with their PVCs and have the status of  these cards authenticated in order to demonstrate the practicability of the card reader.
