Imo denies outbreak of bird flu

IMO State Government has dismissed rumour of presence of the dreaded avian influenza or bird flu in the state. 

Fielding questions from journalists, Imo State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs. Lilian Asuzu, said after a thorough search by the state government utilizing experts in the 27 local councils, there was no discovery or trace of the disease in any farm. 

She urged all Imo people to be vigilant and go about their businesses, adding, “There is no outbreak of bird flu disease in Imo State. Everywhere has been checked.” 

Also speaking, the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Irene Chima, said after checking all nooks and crannies, there was no such case so far, adding that the department was maintaining a close watch and monitoring of all borders in the state to forestall any such case entering the state. 

She said the parastatal was ensuring that the international best practices, relevant laws, regulations and professional ethics were observed in the area.
