Igbo Leaders Caution Against Election Shift, Endorse Jonathan

THE Igbo Leaders of Thought led by constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze has cautioned against any shift in the conduct of the 2015 general elections, saying it would spell doom for the country.

The leaders, who Friday adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as Igbo candidate in the election, further urged Ndigbo in various parts of the country to remain wherever they are and cast their votes to ensure his (Jonathan) re-election.

Addressing reporters shortly after their council meeting in Enugu, Chairman of the group, Nwabueze, stated that yielding to the call for the postponement of the general election would be a great mistake.

“It will be a tragedy for the country if the election is postponed by anybody at this time. Anybody thinking about postponing the election is making a mistake and not wishing the country well. The only body

that can postpone election is INEC. President Jonathan has no power to postpone election. It is only INEC that has power to postpone any election in the country going by the constitution and luckily the INECchairman has said the elections must go on. We will not support any election shift because it will not be good for the country. It will mean altering a lot of things which might cause serious problems that could throw the country into confusion,” Nwabueze said.

Reminded of the state of insecurity in the country, especially in the North East, Nwabueze said it was not enough for anybody to ask for shift in an exercise as important as national election.

“Those areas are preparing for elections alongside others. It is not enough to ask that an election be postponed. Again, what will you be doing when the process is altered?”

In a nine point communiqué released after the meeting, the Igbo leaders stated that though Jonathan’s administration had not seriously

addressed the core promises and commitments made to Ndigbo during the 2011 election campaign, he would serve the best interest of Ndigbo.

“The Igbo leaders of thought believe that the best interest of Ndigbo would be better served by our people supporting the re-election of President Jonathan come February 14, 2015.
