An Enugu East Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday granted bail to a former legislator accused of forgery.

Uche Ekete, a former Majority Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, was arraigned on a two-count charge of forging a power of attorney of a land in Ibagwa Nike, Enugu State.

Police prosecutor Peter Eze told the court that some members of the Ibagwa Nike community petitioned the police that Ekete forged the power of attorney to possess the land which belonged to the community.

Ekete, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate D. Ekoh adjourned the matter till Aug. 31.

Ekete’s counsel, Mr Okenna Agubuzu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the power of attorney was registered in 2012 and had subsisted.

Agubuzu said that the timing of the arrest of Ekete on Monday coincided with a similar arrest in 2014 when the community was preparing for its New Yam Festival.

He said that this year’s festival had been slated for Aug. 31, adding that some elements in the community planned to incarcerate the former legislator until the festival was over.

Ekete was arrested on Monday but was released on Tuesday on the intervention of some political leaders in the state.
