Persons suspected to the members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday attacked the home of Bayelsa State governor-elect Duoye Diri, destroying several properties.

The attack on the home located in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, came after the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon as the governor-elect and ordered that Douye of the People’s Democratic Party, be declared as authentic winner of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state on Thursday, February 13.

The court said Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, who was Lyon’s running mate in the election, forged the certificate he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Also attacked were Steve Azaiki Library, Radio Bayelsa and Peoples Democratic Party PDP secretariat along Imgbi and Azikoro roads respectively. Over 15 vehicles were also destroyed by the protesters, an eyewitness said.

Prior to the attack, the protesters had marched to Government House in Yenagoa, to protest Lyon’s sack.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued the certificate of return to Diri and his deputy-elect Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo after INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu declared the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate as the winner of the election.

Yakubu said the declaration was “In compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court, the Commission met this morning and reviewed the result of the election in which 45 political parties contested.”
