THE Anambra State Executive Council on Wednesday approved 15 per cent pay rise for workers in the state civil service with effect from January.

This is contained in a statement issued by Chief Tony Onyima, the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism.

Onyima said that the decision was in fulfilment of the promise made by Gov. Willie Obiano shortly on assumption of office.

He recalled that the governor made the promise during his maiden meeting with the state workforce.

The commissioner noted that the governor had promised to raise the salary of civil servants to bring it at par with their counterparts in the local government system.

Onyima said that the pay rise was approved because of improvement in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which at that time stood at N500 million monthly.

He said that with determination, aggressiveness and the blockage of loopholes, the state IGR has risen to over N1 billion.

Onyima called on civil servants to reciprocate the government’s gesture by improving their productivity. (NAN)
