Abia monarchs chide member over award of chieftaincy title to Buhari

FOR honoring the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mohammadu Buhari, with the traditional title of Ogbuagu 1 of Aba Kingdom  at the weekend when he came to Aba on  an APC campaign rally, the traditional ruler of Eziama Aba,  Eze Issac Ajuonu Ikonne, the Enyi 1 of Eziama Aba has drawn the ire of  other  traditional rulers in Aba State.

Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers Eze Eberechi Dick of Mgboko in Obingwa Local Council in reaction to the title of Ogbuagu ( lion killer) conferred on Buhari, told journalists in    Umuahia  on Sunday evening that “ Eze Isaac Ajuonu Ikonne of Aba North has no powers to install  Buhari as Ogbuagu 1 of Aba Kingdom”.

He said “ Aba in a strick sense is made up of two local councils,  namely Aba North and Aba  South while as a zone, Aba is made up of nine local councils with over 400 communities”.

In a two page  write-up he read  out to  journalists in the presence of the Abia State Information Commissioner ,  Chief Anthony Agbazuere and the Chief Press Secretary(CPS) to Governor Theodore  A Orji , Mr  Charles Ajunwa,  Eze Dick stated:  “Ikonne is therefore incompetent to give somebody a title on behalf of Aba. Abia Traditional rulers, hereby condemn Ikonne’s resort to politics.

“ Ikonne hosted Buhari, Rochas Okorocha, of Imo ,  Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers state among others and  used the occasion to attack Abia State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria. We disown him and his statements”.

He added that “reports reaching the state traditional rulers indicate that Ikonne was influenced to do what he did. We shall investigate it and take appropriate actions”.

State Information Commissioner Chief Agbazuere in his brief remarks accused Eze Ikonne of consistently but incoherently attacking the state government led by Theodore Orji.

He urged Ikonne to retrace his steps and choose between being a traditional ruler and active partisan politician.
