IN a bid to ensure the physical wellness and fitness of Lagosians as well as maintaining sound health, the Safety Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (SAEF) organised its maiden monthly safety walk in Ikeja, Lagos last weekend.

The group, which is dedicated to the promotion of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment in partnership with the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), Nigerian Red Cross and endorsed by the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), supported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Lagos State Fire Service had the theme: “Keep Safe, Live Healthy.”

According to the programmes moderator Engr. Jamiu Badmos the aim of the walk was to reduce the common sad news in the country of people who slump and die. “We need to keep our heart in good condition. We hope to take this walk to other local councils in the state and beyond.”

He said that walking is important for maintaining physical fitness and contributes positively to maintaining sound health while noting that some of the benefits include increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes, stronger bones and improved balance, Increased muscle strength and endurance and reduced body fat.

The Director General Lagos State Safety Commission, Mrs. Dominga Odebunmi commended members who turned out for the walk and aerobics, while stressing the need for individuals, NGOs and corporate organizations to always support the cause of safety and not wait for things to go wrong before they think of safety.

Commenting on the safety use of gas cylinder in the home to prevent fire especially during the Harmattan season, she noted that it should be located outside the kitchen to avoid sad incidence, while encouraging all Lagosians to patronize competent electrical technicians whenever they have any electrical installations to do.
